WAVERLY, Va. — A Corrections Officer at Sussex I State Prison in Waverly suffered two non-life threatening wounds when he was stabbed by a 26-year-old inmate, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections.
It appeared the inmate, who is serving a life sentence for 1st degree murder, used a metal fence tie in the Wednesday afternoon attack.
“At the time of the incident, the officer was attempting to deliver a mattress to the offender,” a Virginia Department of Corrections spokesperson said. “There was an immediate response from other Sussex I officers to stop the assault.”
The incident was reported at about 3:55 p.m. Wednesday.
“The officer sustained injuries to the face and the back of his head,” the spokesperson continued. “He is recuperating at home.”
