RICHMOND, Va. -- A bullet fired from outside a Richmond home grazed a girl inside the house on 29th Street in the Creighton Court community, according to Richmond Police. The girl suffered a non-life threatening injury, police added.
Richmond Police responded to the shooting along the 1700 block of N. 29th Street, near Nine Mile Road, just after 4:30 a.m.
Richmond native, Ellet Ohree, said he was staying at a friends house across the street when he heard about five shots.
"I definitely heard the shots -- about five shots maybe six. And all of a sudden I see blue lights and cars coming up and down the street," said Ohree.
Ohree said at first he was scared to look out the window for fear that the shooter could aim at him.
"It was so close i didn’t want them shooting at me," he said.
Investigators were on scene from the early hours of the morning until well after the sun rose trying to piece together what happened.
Robert Waller, who does maintenance for the city of Richmond, stopped at a convenience store Wednesday morning just across from where the shooting happened.
He said he and his coworkers are in the Creighton Court area often, and this isn't the first time he's heard of violence in the area. In fact, he said one day while working, he and his coworkers were caught in the middle of it.
"The bullets are coming right by us everyone’s jumping under the truck getting out of the way," Waller said.
But Waller said he still comes back each day.
"It's what we do. We have to come back," he said.
Waller said there's a lot of good people in the area, and that a few people paint a negative image for the entire area. But said he doesn't think there's much that can be done to stop the violence.
"I wish I had the answer," he said.
The child was taken to the hospital to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.
Police have not yet released information about a suspect in the shooting.
