Officers first attempted to pull over the driver for a traffic infraction on Midlothian Turnpike, near Pinetta Drive, at about 2:20 a.m.

The driver did not stop.

"The vehicle subsequently entered onto Route #76 and began travelling south bound at an excessive speed," a Chesterfield Police spokesperson said. "The driver then wrecked his vehicle on the shoulder of the highway and fled in an unknown direction."

The driver, police said, was carrying a gun when he ran from the crash scene.

"The driver was described as a male wearing a red shirt, black pants, black hat and carrying a firearm," a Chesterfield Police spokesperson said.

Officers are still working to find him.
