RICHMOND, Va. -- A naked man who shut down traffic on I-95 has been transported to the hospital after being shot twice by a Richmond Police officer.

Police said the incident started as a hit-and-run near the intersection of Belvidere and Franklin Streets. An officer, who witnessed the incident pursued the vehicle.

The man behind the wheel was naked, according to police.

Police say the suspect tried to get on I-95 at the Chamberlayne Avenue entrance ramp. That when he allegedly struck two vehicles, causing his car to crash into nearby trees.

After the crash, the naked man ran across traffic on I-95 North and became "aggressive" with an officer who tried to apprehend him.

Crime Insider sources say the officer attempted to subdue the suspect with a Taser. When that did not work, those sources say that officer pulled out his service weapon and shot the suspect as he continued to get aggressive.

The man was shot twice and transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The shooting officer is on administrative leave pending the investigation, per protocol. Crime Insider sources say the shooting officer is a veteran Richmond Police Officer.

The shooting investigation is being handled by the Richmond Police Force Investigative Team (FIT).

All lanes were closed near Chamberlayne Avenue at mile marker 76 as Virginia State Police assisted Richmond Police in the search for the naked man.

This is a developing story.
