RICHMOND, Va. -- The Richmond Police Department is investigating a sexual assault that happened near Virginia Commonwealth University's main campus early Saturday morning.
Police said the assault happened at an apartment in the 1000 block of Park Avenue around 3 a.m. when a male suspect walked into the unlocked residence and sexually assaulted someone living there.
Detectives said they did not receive a report of the incident until around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
That is when the university sent out an alert to students about the assault.
"It's unnerving and it's always disappointing when we get alerts like that," said Piper Lynch, a freshman at VCU. "It's something we have to think about as students who live in the area."
Police have not released a suspect description.
While Richmond Police are leading the investigation, VCU Police are stepping up patrols in the area.
