PETERSBURG, Va. - Fire destroyed a home on Halifax Street in Petersburg early Thursday morning. When firefighters arrived, around 3:45 a.m., they saw flames shooting through the roof of the vacant house.

The home is located about one block from Peabody Middle School.

Crews from Chesterfield County and the City of Hopewell arrived to assist Petersburg firefighters.

Petersburg's Assistant Fire Chief Mark Milazzo said firefighters could not enter the house to search for any potential victims.

"The structurally integrity of the house has been compromised and there`s no longer a roof on the structure," Milazzo said.

A man who stopped at the home after seeing the emergency response lights said he and his family had just moved out of the home.

"I moved out the first week of March, so it’s pretty crazy to me that it happened," he said.

The man explained his family moved to downsize.

Milazzo believed the home was a total loss.

Cadaver dogs and their handlers searched the home, Thursday afternoon.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

This is a developing story. Witnesses can send news tips and photos here.
