CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A family of four lost their home, and beloved pet Coco, in an early morning fire.

Chesterfield Fire crews said they could see flames coming out of the Ettrick home's windows when they arrived on Sasha Court at about 12:20 a.m.

Patrice McDaniel woke up to the alarming news that her daughter's house caught fire.

"I pull up and my granddaughter and the dog usually run outside to the car to see me," McDaniel said standing outside the home's charred shell. "They won’t be able to do that ever again."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to get the fire under control.

"He got my grandbabies out and that was most important thing of all," McDaniel said. "Those material things can come again, but life."

While all the family members made it out safely, the family pet -- a white lab --did not.

"His name was Coco and the kids loved him," McDaniel said. "He was like a big kid, always jumping and happy-go-lucky... he will truly be missed."

The American Red Cross is working with the family.

The family set-up a GoFundMe account to help rebuild their lives following the fire.
