RICHMOND, Va. -- Southern States Cooperative, a farm supply retailer, dropped off what the Richmond SPCA described as one of the largest food donations it has ever received. Southern States dropped of two tons of dog food to the SPAC on Hermitage Road.

“The work that Richmond SPCA workers perform on a daily basis has saved the lives of countless pets, and will continue to do so as long as we continue to support them,” Southern States spokesperson Chris Carter said.

Richmond SPCA CEO Robin Starr said the 4,000 pounds of food is one of the largest, if not the largest, it has ever seen.

"The food certainly will last us for a while, but of course we have more than 300 animals in our care on a daily basis," Starr said. "The animals need a lot of food and it will get used up quickly."

Southern States held a “Puppy Paw” fundraiser and raised enough money at their Richmond-area stores to purchase the $2,000 worth of dog food.

Money was raised from stores in Richmond, Goochland, Midlothian, and Gloucester.

Customers were able to purchase a puppy paw emblem with their name on it that the company displayed in the stores’ windows.

“We want to continue to help out animal rescue organizations who have dedicated their lives to help unwanted and abandoned pets have a safe, warm home of their own," Carter said.

The no-kill shelter often takes in dogs and cats who are injured, sick, or in danger of being euthanized. They treat and shelter more than 4,000 animals each year.

Richmond-based Southern States sells farm and home supplies, including pet food, animal health supplies, propane and lawn care supplies.
