RICHMOND, Va. -- It's a tradition that spans generations. Others call it a right of passage.

"It's really fun and to revert back to something we did as a child," Sam Pearson said gripping a sled.

After a winter storm dumped several inches of snow across the Richmond Metro area, dozens of families gathered atop a large hill at Forest Hill Park on the Southside.

There young and old braved near freezing temperatures to ride inner tubes and sleds down what some call "the best hill in Richmond."

"My wife’s mom was sledding this hill when she was a young child," Pearson said.

Children bundled up in hats and gloves even built ramps and a snow castle at the bottom of the steep hill.

"It’s also fun to see the little ones putting their bodies in risk flying off the jumps down there," Pearson said.

Others, like the Ashman family, spent their Saturday building snowmen and animals.

"This is ground zero for fun over here when it snows," Chris Ashman described. "This is the place where everyone comes and sleds down."

This is the second time Ashman and his two children played at Forest Hill Avenue park.

"The snow is sticking together and it’s the perfect for snowman the way it clumps up," Ashman said.

But, families here said the real thrill is spending time with loved ones around the holidays.
