SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. -- The 44-year old man accused of holding his girlfriend and two children captive inside a Spotsylvania County home for more than two years is facing five new felony charges.

On November 20, a grand jury charged Kariem Moore with abduction, rape, forcible sodomy, malicious wounding, and attempting to kill a fetus in connection to the case. Several of the new charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Sources close to the investigation told CBS 6, Moore apparently beat his girlfriend while she was pregnant and discarded the fetus. Those sources said investigators have not been able to locate remains.

On July 29, Spotsylvania Sheriff's deputies were called to Moore's Mine Rd. home for a welfare check after family members told officers they had not heard from the family for some time. When deputies arrived, Moore was in the front yard and was "reluctant to engage with them," officials said.

While officers were talking to Moore, a woman and two children - ages 11 and 8 - ran out a side door of the home, officials said.

The 32-year-old woman was taken to the hospital and is in stable, but serious condition. They were all held captive for two years, deputies said. Moore is the father of the two boys. The woman is their mother, and she at some time dated Moore.

Investigators were told the boys never went to school. They are now staying with a relative who investigators believe came from out of state.

Moore is currently behind bars at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond on previous charges related to the case.
