CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Friends are remembering the wrong-way driver killed in a head-on crash that closed lanes on Interstate 95 near the Chesterfield County-Colonial Heights line early Wednesday morning.

The initial crash was reported at about 4:10 a.m. on I-95 south two miles north of the Temple Avenue exit.

"A man driving a Saturn sedan was traveling northbound in the southbound lane on I-95," Virginia State Police spokesperson Sergeant Keeli Hill said referencing the Virginia State Police troopers' preliminary investigation. "The driver of the Saturn struck a female driving in a Nissan Altima head-on."

A tractor-trailer driver behind the two-vehicle crash was not able to stop in time.

"In an attempt to avoid striking the two other vehicles, the tractor trailer driver was forced to make an evasive maneuver causing it to jackknife hitting a jersey wall...," Sgt. Hill said.

Woman: 'My friend is gone'

Troopers said all three drivers were taken to the hospital where 20-year-old Jailyn Richad Allred, of Chester, died.

Yana Flemming said she and Allred were together almost every day.

“I worked with him, I went to school with him,” she said.

Flemming said when her friend stopped responding to her messages, she knew something was terribly wrong.

“I’ve called him already and left voice messages, because I didn’t know if it was real,” Flemming said.

Virginia State Police officials said their investigation continues into whether alcohol played a role in the crash. Officials said toxicology reports will determine what happens next in their investigation.
