RICHMOND, Va. -- The Richmond School Board has approved phase one of a new facilities plan to help fix Richmond’s outdated and crumbling public schools.

Interim Superintendent Tommy Kranz recommended the plan, which was then approved 5-3 by the school board Monday night.

The plan, called phase one, is projected to cost the city $224,816,178. The cost of the project could change as the planning moves forward.

Phase one involves building new schools facilities for Greene elementary, George Mason Elementary, Woodville Elementary, Elkhardt-Thompson Middle and George Wythe High School.

The recommendation would also include renovations to Fairfield and Francis Elementary schools.

Before the vote Monday, school board member Jonathan Young said he was not in favor of the plans.

“We have a real facilities problem and we need a credible fix and that fix regards consolidation, and regards taking action now. Not adopting a plan that is going to sit on a shelf like its predecessors on 20 25 years, he said.
