Weekend Events: Dominion Energy Christmas Parade & Soul Santa – Black History Museum

The 34th annual Dominion Energy Christmas Parade is Saturday, December 2nd, beginning at 10 a.m. rain or shine! The parade steps off from the Science Museum on West Broad Street and heads east to 7th Street. Prime viewing spots are considered to be Broad Street between the Science Museum and Lowe’s or arrive later and view the parade on Broad Street closer to the Coliseum. If you can’t experience the parade in person, you can watch it LIVE on WTVR-CBS 6 the day of the parade starting at 10 a.m. to noon or see it on Christmas Day.

This year’s parade’s Grand Marshals are Margot Lee Shetterly and Dr. Christine Darden.

Margot Lee Shetterly is a writer, researcher, entrepreneur, and the author of Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Who Helped Win the Space Race. It has been published in 16 international editions, including an English-language UK edition and 15 other languages.

Dr. Christine Darden joined NASA in the late 1960s as a data analyst at Langley Research Center in Virginia, working as part of a pool of “human computers” who wrote complex programs and crunched numbers for engineers. Over the span of her 40-year career at NASA, Dr. Darden contributed to different divisions around High Speed technology, served as Deputy Manager of the TU-144 (the high speed Russian supersonic aircraft), and led the “Experiments Program” and research in Air Traffic Management. Dr. Darden also served on many private government projects, and authored over 50 publications on wing design, flap design, and sonic boom prediction and minimization.

The Annual RVA Holiday Day Party, Saturday, December 2, 3 – 7 pm at t Club Infuzion in Scott’s Addition. Sponsored by The KLM Scholarship Foundation, the local non-profit organization is rolling out the red carpet to raise as much money as they can for deserving college students. The founder of KLM Scholarship Foundation Kimberley Martin says it’s a day of fun for a worthy cause. She says participants will enjoy line dancing, raffles and giveaways. Organizers also coordinated a Greek challenge. The sorority or fraternity with the most members in attendance will win a “We’re number 1” trophy, professional group photo and bragging rights. Martin describes the party attire as classy chic. The RVA Holiday Day Party will be hosted by CBS 6’s Antoinette Essa and DJ Drake. KLM Scholarship Foundation has been serving students who attend Virginia colleges and universities for 15 years and has raised more than $184,000 in book scholarships. The annual POP UP Conference for female Entrepreneurs December 8 and December 9, at the Hyatt House Richmond-West hotel located in Richmond, Virginia. Soul Santa returns to The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia for the Holidays. His visit is a part of the museum’s annual holiday open house Saturday, December 2nd, and Saturday, December 9th, noon to 4 p.m. both days at the museum, 122 West Leigh St. The free event will have storytelling for children, arts and crafts, shopping and it all starts with a historical scavenger hunt that will lead you, hopefully, with the correct answers to Soul Santa. Children will have the opportunity to shop for loved ones with the assistance of a personal shopper, gift items will only cost between range $1 – $8. The City of Petersburg Annual Holiday Parade and Illumination, Saturday, December 2. The parade will begin at 3:00pm and will start at 2223 South Crater Road (across from Good Shepherd Baptist Church) and will end at 3500 South Crater Road (across from Walmart).
