Mechanicsville man killed after crashing, overturning truck in Powhatan

POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. – Police have identified a Mechanicsville man killed after lose control of his truck and overturning Friday morning in Powhatan County.

The man has been identified as 27-year-old Mcdonald Wellford III.

Virginia State Police said the single-vehicle crash happened at approximately 2:00 a.m. in the 3600 block of Old River Trail.

Police said a 2004 Toyota Tacoma, driven by Wellford, was traveling eastbound and “appears to have had left front tire failure causing him to lose control.”

Investigators say that’s when the truck ran off right side of road, striking a drain culvert and overturning.

Wellford, who was the sole occupant of the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing his seatbelt.

Speed and alcohol are being considered factors in the crash, according to State Police.

The crash remains under investigation.
