RICHMOND, Va. — Trips to the grocery store can be challenging for parents of children who rely on wheelchairs to get around. Now shoppers in the Richmond area have a tool to help make those shopping experiences a little easier.

Caroline’s Cart is now available in all Richmond-area Kroger stores, Wegmans, Food Lion, Publix, and Target stores.

The carts, designed for children with special needs, allow children to safely sit in the cart and leave their wheelchairs in the car.

“Caroline’s Cart has really transformed the way we shop. I have two children with special needs and going out to get groceries can be a bit of a challenge,” mother Amy Fields said. “You have no idea how hard it is to drag a wheelchair and a grocery cart around.”

The cart is named after Caroline Long. Her mother designed the special cart to more easily include her daughter Caroline in more family outings.

“We’re so grateful to see what was just a vision in 2007 come to reality in such a big way ten years later,” Drew Ann Longer, creator of Caroline’s Cart, said. “To see that support continue to grow and reach new stores – and most importantly, families in need of making their everyday lives a little bit easier – is the meaning behind what we do every day.”
