Man arrested for setting his house on fire

COLONIAL HEIGHTS , Va. -- A man was charged with arson after Colonial Heights fire investigators said he set his South Valley Road home on fire. Firefighters responded to the house fire just after 10 p.m. Wednesday.

They were told a person might be trapped in the burning house.

When firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters could only attack the fire from the outside.

Eventually they made it inside to search for the person who lived in the home.

That person was not inside the house. He was later found safe in another part of the city.

"An investigation into the fire determined it to be arson.  The occupant Shannon Johnson, 54, has been arrested for arson of a dwelling," a fire department spokesperson said. "He is currently being held at Riverside Regional Jail under no bond."

No one was hurt the in fire.

The home is a total loss.
