From trains and fruitcake to a unique New Year’s celebration – the Science Museum of Virginia has all the right elements for a perfect holiday season!

40th Annual Model Railroad Show
November 24 – 26
Featuring all the bells and whistles, guests will enjoy unique and traditional model train displays from across the state. Meet Clydesdales horses, take an old-fashioned carriage ride (Sunday only), watch a blacksmith in action and ride on the Teddy Bear Express! Compete in “Train Your Brain” Trivia and see Museum educators perform fun holiday-themed demonstrations. Learn how trains work, conduct experiments, check out special demonstrations and enjoy a holiday weekend filled with fun for the whole family.

Fruitcake Science
December 26 – 30
During this quirky, annual holiday event, the Museum will conduct unconventional experiments on everyone’s least favorite holiday treat, the fruitcake! Watch in amazement as Museum educators burn, drop and freeze fruitcakes – in the name of science, of course. Celebrate the season with a memorable week chockful of science!

Noon Year’s Eve
December 31
Ring in the Noon Year with the Museum! Count down to noon to see a dramatic and quirky version of the traditional ball drop! Kick off the New Year with science on your side – watch 2,017 bouncy balls, paper streamers and confetti bring our Rotunda to life for a special ball drop and apple juice toast to celebrate the New Year. Note: the Museum will open at 9:30 am for this exciting event!
