RICHMOND, Va. — The Library of Virginia is closed and being examined for structural damage after a bucket truck, being used to hang banners, toppled into the building Monday morning.

Two people inside the bucket were stranded in the air and had to be rescued by emergency workers, Richmond Fire Capt. Earl Dyre said.

The workers were not hurt.

Had the bucket not gotten hung on the ledge of the building, the people in the bucket could have fallen out, Capt. Dyre said.

The incident has closed roads in the area.

“Please avoid the area of 9th Street between Broad and Grace and avoid Broad between 10th and 8th,” the Virginia Department of General Services reported in a Monday morning alert. “These streets are closed at this time due to an equipment accident.”

Images from the scene appear to show a nearly toppled bucket truck up on two tires outside the Library of Virginia.

The incident was reported at 6:30 a.m.
