NOTTOWAY COUNTY, Va. -- A Nottoway deputy is seriously injured after a single-vehicle crash while responding to a call Thursday morning.

The Nottoway Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened at approximately 10:40 a.m. while responding to a breaking and entering call on Cary Shop Road.

“A Nottoway County Sheriff's Deputy traveling westbound in the 8500 block of Courthouse Road was responding to a call when he ran off the right side of the road in a curve, striking a stump then a tree on the driver's side of the car,” said a Virginia State Police spokesperson.

The deputy, identified as 25-year-old Franklin Gregory Tanner, was transported via MedFlight to VCU Medical Center. He is listed in critical but stable condition.

Tanner has been with the sheriff’s office for two years.

Residents say accidents common on West Courthouse Road

West Courthouse Road in Burkeville has played host to some horrific crashes

"When you come up the hill there you can't see until you are at the top and by that time it's too late,” said Tommy Atkins, who lives nearby. “There have been several bad accidents there."

Thursday's crash involved Nottoway Deputy Greg Tanner.  Deputies say he was responding with lights and sirens to a burglary in process call when he crashed.

"They couldn't get him out, so they had to use the Jaws of Life," said Atkins.

Those living in the area say the accident hits too close to home. Tanner, a husband and father of two young children, is like family to those who live on this winding county road.

"He went to the academy with my son-in-law, who is an officer, so we know him real well," said Atkins.

Virginia State Police are investigating the crash.

“We ask the community to pray for him,” the Nottoway Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
