RICHMOND, Va. – More than 100 preschoolers at Mary Scott Annex were evacuated Tuesday morning after someone sprayed a purple substance in a bathroom at the school.

The school is located at 4011 Moss Side Avenue on the city’s Northside.

Richmond Public Schools Interim Superintendent Tommy Kranz said someone in the school sprayed a purple substance in one of the bathrooms in the building around 10 a.m.

As a result, police and fire crews were contacted and responded.

Hazmat crews blocked off several streets around the school.

Crews searched the building, but were unable to locate any of the suspect substance.

Kranz said children were initially evacuated to the back of the building. Once buses arrived, the children and staff relocated to Ginter Park Elementary School, which is just over a half a mile from Mary Scott.

Officials said parents were notified of the incident via the ParentLink phone system.

The preschooler were dismissed from Ginter Park at the end of the school day, but Kranz said school officials would also be at Mary Scott in case any parents arrived there.

Hazmat crews searched the school, but were unable to locate any of the suspect substance.
