RICHMOND, Va. – Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man was shot and killed on Richmond’s East End Monday afternoon.

The shooting happened just before 5 p.m. at the intersection of Nine Mile Road and North 30th Street. Police said an officer was nearby and heard a volley of shots. Witnesses say they heard at least five shots.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to VCU Medical Center where he succumbed to those injuries.

Jon Burkett first reported about an ongoing “turf war” between Whitcomb and Creighton on last week's Crime Insider.

Sources say Monday’s homicide is believed to be connected, resulting in the city’s 37th murder of the year.

Crime Insider sources say the man shot to death is known in the East End community as "Wawa"

Those sources say the murder may also be connected to a drive by at a home in Whitcomb Court earlier in the day. Chief Alfred Durham said that is part of this investigation.

"In the last couple of weeks there has been an exchange of gun fire between these communities. We are trying to isolate the players but we can't do it alone," said Durham. "These residents who are fearful... we understand but they have to tell us who's involved."

Police have not released any information about a suspect or motive at this time.
