Teen drowns after suffering medical emergency in Lake Anna: sources

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. -- A teenager drowned after he suffered a medical emergency swimming in Lake Anna over the weekend, Crime Insider sources confirmed to CBS 6. The drowning happened on the Spotsylvania side of the lake on Saturday, August 5.

The 14-year-old boy was swimming in the lake when he suffered a medical emergency related to diabetes, according to those sources. The child went under the water and had to be rescued.

A lifeguard and an off-duty doctor worked desperately to try and save the teenager's life, a witness said.

The teen was at the lake that day with his church group from Maryland, according to sources.

Police have not yet released the teenager's name.

The Louisa County Sheriff Marine Unit, the Spotsylvania County Marine Unit, and Conservation Police and Park Rangers responded to the scene.
