RICHMOND, Va. -- Charges are pending against a driver after a woman was struck by a car while crossing Broad Street in downtown Richmond Thursday afternoon.

Richmond police officials said Black Chevy Cruze traveling on N. 8th Street made a left onto East Broad Street around 1 p.m., police told CBS 6.  At that time a woman crossing Broad Street was struck.

The female was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver who hit the woman told WTVR CBS 6 reporter Brennan Somers that he stayed at the scene and called 911.

He claimed the light was green, but police said it is too early to confirm is that is the case.

Police said that even if the light was green, drivers must yield to pedestrians since the walk signal can be activated at the same time.

Additionally, police are reviewing video from nearby surveillance cameras installed two years ago for the UCI Road World Championships bike race.

Police said charges are pending against the driver.

Broad Street eastbound between 8th and 9th streets was blocked off while police investigated, but the scene was clear as of 4:15 p.m.
