Man hospitalized, 1 injured after cigarette sparks house fire

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. -- A man is in serious condition after an improperly disposed cigarette started a fire in a two-story home Sunday morning.

Colonial Heights Fire and EMS crews responded along with Chesterfield Fire crews to the 300 block of Virginia Avenue around 6 a.m. for a report of a house fire.

Upon arrival, crews found a two-story single family home with smoke and fire showing and received a report that a male victim was still inside. He was quickly located on the second floor of the home and brought to safety.

The man was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

Another victim was treated on scene for smoke inhalation.

With assistance from Petersburg and Fort Lee Fire and EMS units, the fire was under control in about 30 minutes.

The Red Cross was contacted to assist the two occupants of the home.

An investigation into the fire determined that it was caused by a cigarette and that the estimated damage to the home is about $20,000 worth.
