HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- The standoff with an armed-robbery suspect ended in an apparent suicide Tuesday evening after the man barricaded himself for more than three hours inside the Walgreens on S Laburnum Avenue in Henrico's East End.

The man entered the store and jumped over the counter at the pharmacy, and at least one shot was fired, Crime Insider sources told CBS 6. Someone from the pharmacy drive-thru window witnessed the incident and called police, those sources added.

At approximately 5:20 p.m., Henrico Police responded to the Walgreens pharmacy, located at 4845 S. Laburnum Avenue for an armed robbery. A SWAT team and K9 units also responded to the store.

A single shot rang out inside the store and that's when the suspect, described as a white male, barricaded himself inside back of the store, police said. All employees and customers safely exited the store.

Police were still investigating if the suspect fired the single shot in the air or at someone else.

“During negotiations, additional shots were fired by the suspect. He was later found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene,” sa Henrico Police spokesperson said.

Police said no officers fired their guns during the incident.

Crime Insider sources said some of the suspect's family members were on the scene. Police are still investigating the incident.
