RICHMOND, Va. -- A man was shot Friday afternoon along the 1800 block of Joplin Avenue in South Richmond.

The man was conscious and breathing when officers and emergency crews arrived at the scene, according to Richmond Police.

The shooting was reported at about 1:08 p.m.

A witness was in the neighborhood to drive her mother to the store. She said a victim in his late teens ran up to her van and begged for help. He was shot in the chest.

The witness said he gave her his mother's number, and she contacted 911 and the boy's mother.

"Sounded like a loud firecracker;  like a big balloon," she said. "As I was pulling off he ran up he said help I've been shot."

She said she helped keep the kid from passing out until the ambulance arrived.

"It's just too many kids getting shot, too many young, young people getting shot," she said.

Crime Insider sources tell Jon Burkett that the victim claimed he was robbed and shot. Police are investigating his version of the events.

Those sources say the man is in stable condition as of Friday night.

This is a developing story. Witnesses can send news tips and photos here.
