HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Varina High School student Kevonte LaQuan Sessoms, 18, was killed Thursday night in Henrico.

"Students and families may notice an increased police presence at Varina High School [Friday] morning," Henrico Schools spokesman Andy Jenks said. "This is because of an unfortunate incident that took place last night involving a student."

Additional support personnel were called into Varina Friday to help students and staff who need someone to talk to, Jenks said.

Henrico Police confirmed Sessoms was shot and killed near the intersection of Westover Avenue and Futura Avenue, across from a church, at about 8:54 p.m. Thursday.

"Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from obvious signs of trauma," a Henrico Police spokesman said. "The male victim was transported to VCU Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries."

Police have not yet released information about a shooting suspect, nor a motive.

"He had a very goofy and outgoing personality, definitely an ideal class clown," friend and former classmate Jamie Wagner said. "He had so many friends not just from Varina, but from schools all over the county. Overall great kid, terrible loss."

Friends said he was well known within the community.

"He always had a great heart and a great mind, and wanted to go far in life," said one classmate. "I guess he just got affiliated with the wrong people and it's sad to see young lives get taken like that every day around here."
