Man shot near Richmond elementary school

RICHMOND, Va. -- A man was taken to the hospital after he was found shot just a block from Swansboro Elementary School.

Just before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Richmond Police said they were called to a shooting on Midlothian Turnpike at W. 33rd Street on the city's Southside.

When officers arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Police have not released the identity of the victim yet.

While police were still at the scene of the shooting, they said a car sped off and crashed about a mile away, at Westover Hills Boulevard and Crutchfield Street.

By the time officers got to the scene of the crash, the driver of the car had run off.

Detectives are trying to figure out if the crash was related to the shooting, and continue to look for suspects.
