HENRICO COUNTY, Va. –A New York man has been charged after a tractor trailer containing lettuce overturned in a two vehicle accident on Interstate 295 Sunday morning.
Virginia State Police spokesperson Sgt. Steve Vick told CBS 6 that 32-year-old Denroy R. Budhan of New York was charged with reckless driving and defective equipment in the crash.
The accident occurred just before 8:15 a.m. when a 2003 Freightliner tractor trailer containing 30,000 pounds of lettuce was traveling northbound in the center lane and attempted to pass a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. The trailer begin to fishtail while attempting to pass, causing the driver to lose control and strike the Chevrolet.
After the initial impact, the tractor trailer ran off the road to the right and struck the guard rail before bouncing back to the left and overturning. The trailer blocked all three lanes of northbound traffic at exit 22 to Route 5.
No one was injured in the crash.
As of 1:30 p.m., troopers were still on scene cleaning up the lettuce. There are no backups reported.
All lanes had reopened by 5 p.m.
