RICHMOND, Va. -- When she first got the text from her son, Crystal Foster did not think much of it.

The texted photo showed her son's school snack -- a Pop-Tart -- with the edges pulled off.

But when her son explained what the picture showed, the Thomas Jefferson High School parent said she got grossed out.

"He said he was almost done and saw something move. The bugs were brown," she said.

Worried he had eaten bugs, Foster said her son when to the school nurse.

She then took him to the doctor because he was feeling sick.

Foster said she contacted Richmond Schools about the situation, but was not happy with their response.

She said she was told the Pop-Tarts were pulled from school cafeterias and Richmond Assistant Superintendent Tommy Kranz added the school district contacted both the Pop-Tart manufacturer and distributor to report the issue.

"We do not have any other reports or any type of problem with the product during that period of time, " Kranz said. "Looking at the servings that we have done and at the servings that particular day, we do have a very safe product that we offer."

Kranz called the school system's food safety record exemplary, adding the serve more than 38,000 meals a day.

Foster was left wondering how her son's snack became contaminated and what, if any, other school food suffered the same fate.
