PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. -- Police officers and sheriff's deputies in Prince George County have raised thousands for cancer awareness and prevention with their version of no-shave November.

For the past 30 days, Police and Sheriff Personnel grew out their beards and donated their hair-maintenance expenses for the cause.

Officers and deputies were asked to donate one dollar per day for their participation.

The campaign raised a total of $1900.

All of the money will be donated to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The agencies participated in the campaign to honor their fleet manager, Ralph Summerson, who is battling cancer.

“It’s the first year the local officers ventured into this bearded territory, and the level of participation and community support has been great,” said a Prince George Police spokesperson. “Since the officers participating in this endeavor are constantly in contact with the public, their bearded faces have been a catalyst for generating conversations about cancer awareness and fundraising efforts.”

Our officers and deputies will return to clean-shaven Thursday.
