RICHMOND, Va. — Governor Terry McAuliffe has approved a special election date for three General Assembly seats to be held on January 10, 2017.
This comes after the current seat holders won elections to different office and submitted their resignations from the General Assembly.
The three special elections will be held for Virginia Senate District 9 (Donald McEachin), Virginia Senate District 22 (Tom Garrett) and Virginia House of Delegates District 85 (Scott Taylor).
Senate District 9 is open after State Senator Donald McEachin (D) defeated Henrico Sheriff Mike Wade (R) in the congressional race for Virginia’s 4th district seat in November.
Parts of Richmond, Henrico, and Hanover, along with all of Charles City County make up Virginia’s 9th State Senate District.
Virginia State delegate Jennifer McClellan (D) has already announced she will run for McEachin’s vacant State Senator position in January.
Senate District 22 is open after State Senator Tom Garrett (R) defeated Jane Dittmar (D) in the congressional race for Virginia’s 5th district seat.
District 22 is made up of all of Amherst County, Appomattox County, Buckingham County, Cumberland County, Fluvanna County, Goochland County, part of Louisa County, and part of the City of Lynchburg.
House of Delegates District 85 is open after State Senator Scott Taylor (R) defeated Shaun Brown (D) in the congressional race for Virginia’s 2nd district seat.
District 85 of the House of Delegates includes part of Virginia Beach.
