CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A toddler was reunited with her parents after drivers found the little girl wandering beside the heavily traveled Harrowgate Road.

Chesterfield Police responded to the incident around 8:30 Tuesday morning. A picture taken by a witness shows a Good Samaritan holding the hand of the girl, while talking to an officer.

Witnesses said the toddler was found unharmed, but couldn't tell police where she lived. She was wearing a coat, boots,  and a backpack.

The little girl told drivers who stopped to help that she was two years old.

Douglas Patterson said he lives nearby and helped officers reunite the toddler with her step-mother since he recognized the girl.

"Her siblings came down to catch the school bus and evidently she followed them down here," said Patterson. "She kept on going until she got down to Harrowgate Road."

Patterson said the parent was asleep and officers had to wake the mother up. The toddler lived about a half of a mile away from where she was found.

The speed limit on Harrowgate Road in South Chesterfield is 45 miles per hour.

Lt. David Sumner confirmed that police are currently investigating and have notified Child Protective Services. He said at this point in the investigation he does not anticipate any charges will be filed.
