LUNENBURG COUNTY, Va. -- Authorities believe they have discovered the remains of a woman who vanished in Kenbridge more than three years ago.

Family members told WTVR CBS 6 in 2013 that Virginia Edmonds, 73, was last seen on the night of June 28 after she left the house for the third time that day.

More than a month passed before a hunter stumbled upon her car in a remote area of the woods in the Flat Rock Creek area of the county in September of 2013.

Search and rescue teams covered a more than 12-mile radius from where Edmonds’ car was located, but did not find her.

Lunenburg County Sheriff Arthur Townsend said a hunter on the Red Bank Hunt Club's property discovered human remains around 10 a.m. Saturday.

Townsend said the remains will be transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Richmond for positive identification.

Edmonds' stepdaughter, Deborah Maddux, told WTVR CBS 6 back in 2013 that the 73-year-old was very outgoing.

"I don't think she would have any malice in her heart against anyone and I can't imagine anyone having malice against her," Maddux said.

If you have information that could help investigators, call the Lunenburg County Sheriff's Office at 434-696-4452.
