Would-be thief jumps on backhoe, tries to crack ATM

HOPEWELL, Va. -- A would-be criminal took advantage of a nearby backhoe to try to break into an automated teller machine last weekend.

Police said the suspect was able to get the backhoe started around 1 a.m. Sunday. The suspect them moved up against the ATM, but struck out when it came to making a withdrawal.

Surveillance video showed the arm of the backhoe swinging and hitting the ATM three times. The exterior of the machine was damaged, but the cash remained safely stacked inside.

Police said after three strikes the suspect ran off and left the backhoe at the bank on 2nd Avenue.

A passing driver spotted the backhoe just before 6 a.m. Sunday and called police.
