Standoff is over: Apartments near JMU evacuated

UPDATE: The standoff has ended. The man was taken into custody, WHSV reported.

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Police have blocked off traffic around The Harrison apartment complex near James Madison University in Harrisonburg.

Officers are in a standoff with someone in one of the apartments on Devon Lane, WHSV reported.

Police said the person involved in the standoff is not a JMU student.

Police have not yet said what prompted the man to barricade himself in the apartment and spark the standoff.

It was also not made clear whether or not the man had a gun.

“There is ongoing police activity at The Harrison apartment complex at the 1100 block of Devon Lane. Surrounding buildings have been evacuated. Continue to avoid the area,” JMU alerted students. “What is known at this time is that a suspect, who is not a JMU student, is barricaded inside of an apartment. The JMU Police Department is providing support to the Harrisonburg Police Department, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police, who are responding to the incident. There is no threat to campus. Students will be made aware when it is safe to return to the Devon Lane area. Follow @JMU on Twitter and http://www.jmu.edu for updates.”

The incident began at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
