RICHMOND, Va. — I need a drink and apparently many Virginians agree!

Alcohol sales in the Commonwealth grew more than five percent at stores and more than seven percent at restaurants, according to the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC).

“Virginia ABC’s gross sales increased to $898 million, up $49.4 million over the previous year, while profits rose to $165 million, a jump of $13 million,” an ABC spokesman said. “Its 18th consecutive, record-breaking year for sales.”

ABC credits the sales increase, in part, to its ability to adapt to the “changing 21st century marketplace.”

“Our latest efforts — an award-winning website, online sales, marketing campaigns, fresh product mix and innovative store designs—all demonstrate our commitment to taking the strategic actions necessary for reinvestment and advancement of the business to insure long-term stability and growth,” ABC Chairman Jeffrey Painter said.

If you’re of the opinion that the stressful 2016 election played a role in the alcohol sales spike, consider this, fiscal year 2016 ended on June 30.
