HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- A Henrico family who contacted CBS 6 Problem Solvers after they said a contractor left an empty hole in their roof, will soon have a solid roof over their heads, thanks to a CBS 6 viewer.

Fred Graef saw our story last week about the Etter family.

The family told CBS 6 they hired a handyman to repair a leak in their roof, but says the contractor did more harm than good.

The Etter’s said the man put a large hole in the roof, and then walked away from the job because of “confusion” With the price quote.

“I can’t believe anyone would do that to somebody,” said Graef.

Graef, with CSA Builders called CBS 6 minutes after our story aired, wanting to help the family fix the roof at a small cost.

“I can’t describe how thankful we are,” said Leah Etter. “To hear that and get a message saying we’re going to get it back to new.”

Graef arrived to the Etter’s home Monday morning to take a look at the roof, and see what the job would entail.

He said he will be able to get the job done, but believes there was more work than what the family was initially told by the handyman.

“I don’t think they were told about all the work that needs to be done,” said Graef. "There's a bit of black mold that started growing because of all the moisture and everything."

Graef is prepared to start work on Tuesday.

He said those looking to hire someone always need to make sure to have everything in writing.

“Contracts are gold,” he said. “Don’t ever do anything or give out anything without having a contract.”

Graef said also make sure to ask for references.

“Make sure the references are credible references,” he said. “Anybody can sit there and say they have a reference.”

The CBS 6 Problem Solvers also recommend, before hiring a contractor, to see if they are insured and if they have any rating through the BBB.

Graef said the work should take about a week and a half.

CBS 6 will update you on the progress.
