Springers shut out Varina in second half, pull away for 45-26 win

Varina, Va - Highland Springs will have home field advantage all the way to the state semifinals in defense of last year's state championship after wrapping up the top seed in 5A South with a 45-26 win at Varina.

Springers quarterback Juwan Carter threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Chris Thaxton caught one of those scores and 4 other passes for 146 yards. Shy're McKiever added two touchdowns.

Varina was within 2 at the half, thanks to 239 combined yards rushing and 3 TDs from CJ Jones and Stephen Richardson. But the Springers outscored the Blue Devils 17-0 in the second half to pull away for the win.

Highland Springs (9-1) should host Deep Run in the first round of the playoffs next week, while Varina (5-5) should earn the #6 seed and a trip to L.C. Bird
