VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- A 21-year-old man is in jail after he allegedly poisoned his cat before strangling the animal to death and then throwing it into the trash.

Curtis Kinzey was arrested and charged with animal cruelty Wednesday.

The crime allegedly happened at the home where Kinzey lived on Cutty Sark Road in Virginia Beach’s Alanton neighborhood, WTKR reported.

According to court documents, Kinzey claimed to have killed his cat by poisoning it and then choking the animal to death.

Once the cat was dead, court paperwork states he threw the animal into the trash.

Daphna Nachminovitch, senior vice president of PETA's Cruelty Investigations Department, said the allegations are troubling.

“Anyone who is capable of poising a cat, strangling a cat… is a danger to our community,” Nachminovitch said “So we’re very, very thankful this is being taken seriously and that this person is behind bars.”

Additionally, Nachminovitch said the fact where Kinzey killed his pet – an animal he knew –makes the crime that more disconcerting.

“Anyone who is capable of any harming any animal -- let alone the animal who depends on them for everything. For necessities of life: food, water, shelter, veterinary care and safety,” Nachminovitch said. “Someone who is capable of intentionally committing a violent act towards an animal who loves them, who depends on them is a sick individual.”

A reporter attempted to question a woman at the home on Cutty Sark Road on Friday, but was told to get off the property.

Kinzey, who is being held without bond at the Virginia Beach Jail, has a bond hearing scheduled for 8 a.m. Monday.
