COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. -- A roadside Highway Marker will be unveiled Friday outside the The Old Brick House in Colonial Heights.
The Virginia Historic Resources approved the installation of the marker that reads:
Conjurer's Neck located on this peninsula formed by the Swift Creek and the Appomattox River, was occupied by Native Americans as early as 1000-3000 BC.
Colonists settled in that spot in 1620.
"The place came to be known as Conjurer’s Neck because a Native American priest or healer, which the English called a 'conjurer,' is thought to have lived there at one time. The presence of such conjurers was considered protective, as they were believed to ward off evil spirits dwelling in the waters," The Old Brick House Foundation posted online.
Richard Kennon built The Old Brick House in 1684.
The new Highway Marker will be dedicated in an 11 a.m. ceremony.
