RICHMOND, Va. – Did you know that a man so fluent in the scripture could also take a mic, pop his collar, and show you how a Motor City rocker throws down?

Well, that’s precisely why Throwback Thursday exists.

In January 1995, CBS 6 reporter and anchor Angie Miles interviewed Dr. Lance Watson, the Pastor of St. Paul’s Baptist Church in Creighton Court, for a series highlighting role models in the community.

“I’m a Motor City rocker/ you know I am the best/ I’m so much better than all the rest,” he rapped. “If you need an emcee, I always take the show – and I don’t even need a radio.”

Pastor Watson is a study in how to be comfortable in most any scenario. The son of a Detroit family with 17 children, he turned the experience towards his community.

“You develop the ability to work with all kinds of people,” he said.

He said he was trying to build a sense of community, and -- flash forward 21 years -- he continues to do so.

When CBS 6 interviewed him he had been leading for 10 years and the congregation had grown from 300 to 3,000. Now St. Paul’s has three campuses; two in the Richmond area, on Creighton Road and Belt Blvd, and on Elm Street in Petersburg.
