RICHMOND, Va – A mother of one of the two children shot in Mosby Court Saturday night has planned a “Put the Guns Down” walk on Monday evening, hoping to prevent other innocent kids from getting hurt.

"My baby did not deserve this, my baby did not deserve this,” said Shavonne Brown.

Brown’s 11-year-old son Jalil Austin was shot in the leg, and is being treated at the hospital. The sixth grader plays for the Blackwell Bulldogs football team.

"All he keeps talking about is football. The same day my baby got offensive player of the year,” Brown said.

The other victim is 13-year-old Gelena Brown. The eighth grader was shot in the back and is now recovering, at home.

"Talk it out, fight it out. You don't have to shoot. It was kids out here,” Brown said.

Brown and her children live on the Southside and were visiting family in Mosby Court when the shooting began.  A group of kids was playing on Redd Street when police say shots rang out.

Officers said they were caught in the crossfire and don’t think the kids were targets.

So far, no arrests have been made. Police found a white car they believe was involved in the shooting. The car is being processed for evidence.

"I let him go out of my eyesight for one second, and I keep thinking of ways of what I should've [done]. Or what I could've done to prevent this from happening to my son,” Brown said.

Brown said that a group of people will meet at 6 p.m. on Oct. 17.  at the intersection of Redd and Coalter Streets, for the walk and rally.

"Maybe I can stop people from picking up the guns next time when it's somebody else's child,” she said.
