State Police identify man killed in Essex County crash

ESSEX COUNTY, Va. — State Police have identified the man killed in a fatal two-vehicle crash in Essex County Monday evening.

The crash happened around 5:40 p.m. in the 3000 block of Desha Road/Route 659.

The victim has been identified as Marcus E. Pitts, 30, of Dunnsville, Virginia.

Police said a 1996 Buick Century was traveling east on Route 659 when it crossed the center line and struck a 2006 Kenworth tractor trailer hauling logs head-on.

Pitts was the driver and sole occupant of the 1996 Buick. He was pronuned dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured and they were wearing a seatbelt.

Investigators say speed is being considered as a factor in the crash. There are no charges in the accident.
