Man drowns checking storm damage in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – A man died after going outside of his home to check for storm damage from Hurricane Matthew in Hampton early Sunday, according to police.

Just after midnight on Oct. 9, dispatch received a call in regards to a drowning in the first block of Sherry Dell Drive, WTKR reported.

Both Hampton Fire and Rescue and officers from the Hampton Police Department responded to the scene.

Police said bystanders found the man unresponsive in standing flood water and that he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death appears storm related, but police are still investigating. The cause of the man’s death is still unknown.
