OUTER BANKS, N.C. — Hurricane Matthew left behind record-breaking flooding as the center of the storm moved out into the Atlantic Ocean, dragging bands of heavy rain with it across eastern North Carolina.

The Category 1 hurricane dropped 8 to 20 inches of rain in the Tar Heel State and southeast Virginia.

Photographer Matt Lusk snapped incredibly powerful pictures of the flooding, surging waves and wake of destruction.

“A storm we’ll be talking about for many years,” Lusk wrote on his professional Facebook page. “I’ve never seen anything like it. The beach road flooding was surreal. Historical sound side flooding on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke.”

“Thoughts are with everyone affected by this nasty storm!!”

Below are selected photos, used with his permission, of the storm and its aftermath. You can click over to see the rest of the images.

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory told residents the flooding could be the worst since Hurricane Floyd pounded the state in 1999.

Aerials taken Monday afternoon around 4 p.m. , from the Kill Devil Hills/Nags Head beach road shows that flooding has receded, but lots of standing water remains. The road washed out just south of the Black Pelican in Kitty Hawk.
