RICHMOND, Va. -- A Central Virginia couple on their honeymoon in the Caribbean won't return home as scheduled because of the effects of Hurricane Matthew.

Justin and Amanda Dance tied the knot on Oct. 1 and flew to Antigua for their honeymoon.

The young Richmond couple was scheduled to fly back on Friday, but the deadly storm has forced their flight to be cancelled.

Overnight Matthew weakened from a Category 4 to a Category 3, but the hurricane still was dumping heavy rains and battering beachfront communities with powerful, howling winds. It had taken out power for more than 300,000 Floridians.

Fortunately for the couple, the hurricane did not hit their resort and saved them from having to evacuate the island.

"It never came here to Antigua, which is where I am," said Amanda. "So, we just missed it."

Matthew’s eyewall was brushing Cape Canaveral, while packing 100 miles per hour winds, according to the National Hurricane Center at 6 a.m. ET. It had not made landfall.

"All of the videos look like it's terrible in the Bahamas, but we got very lucky," she said.

The two are expected to fly back to Virginia on Monday.
