Richmond Heart Walk, Step UP for Down Syndrome & ASALH Conference

RICHMOND: Richmond Heart Walk, Saturday, October 8 at West Creek Parkway, a heart-healthy one and three-mile walk in support of the American Heart Association’s lifesaving research and programs aimed at reducing heart disease and stroke in our community. Activities include: Heart and brain health education, Kid’s zone area, Tribute Wall honoring loved ones affected by heart diseases and stroke, Anthem Hands-Only® CPR training demonstrations , VCU Medical Center “spot the signs of stroke F.A.S.T” education and one mile walk honor stroke survivors and heroes, Heart disease and stroke survivors wearing red caps and leading the walk, Company & community walk teams sporting team t-shirts, Leashed pets and strollers welcome. Activities Begin start 8:00 am,  Opening Ceremonies  9:00 am and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. at 12575 West Creek Parkway next to Richmond Striker’s West Creek fields. Step UP for Down Syndrome

The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond hosts the 10th anniversary of its primary fundraiser, the Step UP for Down Syndrome 5K & Family Festival, A celebration of the accomplishments of individuals with Down syndrome. The Free Family Festival is Saturday, October 8,  from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Innsbrook Pavilion. Activities include: 5K Run is at 8:30, 1-Mile Advocacy Run/Walk at 10 a.m., live music, games and a Superstars Fashion Show Featuring children/adults with Down syndrome at 12:15.

Also on Oct. 6, internationally acclaimed musician Sujeet Desai, who has Down syndrome and has performed at Carnegie Hall and appeared on Oprah, The View and 20/20, will play a concert at The Tin Pan starting at 7:30; event also features local individuals with Down syndrome. ASALH Meeting & Conference

ASALH (Association for the Study of African-American Life & History) Annual Meeting & Conference October 5-9, Richmond Marriott. The 101st annual meeting provides a historic occasion for teachers, branch members, scholars and for people of all ages and all communities to explore the 2016 Black History theme “Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African-American Memories.” Featuring more than 200 sessions and the free Film Festival,  Keynote presentations include social critics Ta-Nehisi Coates and Jelani Cobb, to the equal justice message of the lawyer Bryan Stevenson, a stalwart voice for the incarcerated in America. There will also be the ASALH Black History Tours featuring tours of historic Petersburg ‘s Pocahontas Island and the Pocahontas Island Black History Museum,  sites in Richmond to include Maggie Lena Walker House as well as historic Jamestown.
