RICHMOND, Va. -- Former Richmond strip club owner Sam Moore is set to be released from prison this week after serving six-and-a-half years for tax evasion.

Moore is best known as the controversial, former owner of the now closed Club Velvet strip club in Shockoe Bottom.

He is scheduled to be released Saturday, October 8.

In 2011, Moore was convicted of tax offenses relating to tax years 2005-2007.

Moore, 51, is currently being held at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Fort Dix, New Jersey. After his release, he is scheduled for six months at a halfway house.

Upon his release, Moore has requested to reside in Virginia Beach, pending approve from his case manager.

If denied, Moore will be required to reside in the Richmond area.

In 2011, Moore was sentenced to 78 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release, and imposed a $250,000 fine.

After a raid on the club, investigators said Moore under-reported his earnings to the IRS.

Judge Robert Payne increased Moore’s initial sentencing, citing obstruction of justice before and during his two week trial.

The Judge said Moore tampered with the grand jury, and also attempted to pay witnesses and asked them to lie.

In 1998, Moore was acquitted of murder in a fatal stabbing during a fight. In addition, while in charge of Club Velvet, Moore was convicted of having sex with a minor.
