CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- As part of CBS 6 Gives back-to-school edition, we’ve surprised teachers, lunch ladies, bus drivers, and others who are dedicated to helping children learn.

So, CBS 6 wanted to honor a special chesterfield father who volunteers at his child’s school, Providence Elementary, everyday.

Mr. Durham is a part of Watch D.O.G.S, or Dads of Great Students. It is a national program where father figures volunteer to serve at least one day a year in a variety of school activities.

Durham participates in the program 5 days a week.

No matter what the weather, he`s there opening and closing car doors and helping students with their backpacks, so they get to class safely.

CBS 6 anchor Julie Bragg, with the help of Union Bank and Trust, surprised Mr. Durham in a back-to-school edition of CBS 6 Gives.

Julie Bragg caught up with the Chesterfield father while he was volunteering and preparing a young student for the school day.

“Mr. Durham, we’re here to surprise you, for exactly what you were doing right there,” said Julie. “We like to surprise people for doing special things and we want to, you know all the dads are Watch D.O.G.S, well we figure you’re the top dog, so we brought you a hat… a special channel 6 umbrella and a gift card just to say thank you for all that you do for the kids.”

“I’m just glad to serve the kids, it’s all about serving first and I’m glad to serve and see all the wonderful smiles of the kids,” said Durham.

“And you do this every day… why?” Julie asked.

“I saw a need and I’m a servant,” he said. “I wanted to serve because that’s what I’m best at.”

“We usually tell people to pay it forward, but you pay it forward every day. Thank you so much,” said Julie.
